These articles have been posted here to assist breeders in their efforts to produce healthy litters. To the general public we would like to say, the dog breeding and exhibiting world is devoted to the production of the healthiest puppies, in mind and body, that is possible , given the state of the art. And, the state of the art is progressing rapidly, with genetic testing for inherited defects already available, in some cases, and soon to be available in others. As a veterinarian, I am occasionally upset by the depiction in the general press of breeders exploiting their dogs, and uncaringly producing puppies with genetic defects. Nothing could be further from the truth.

However, there are also people who produce puppies who are not "BREEDERS AND EXHIBITORS". Uncaring puppy mill operators who sell to pet stores, and careless back yard breeders do not qualify as true DOG BREEDERS. 1. The fee for the stud service is payable at the time of service, or terms as follows:


        The owner of the dam identified above agrees on this date:    /    /     (initialed:        ) that the stud fee must be paid to the stud dog owner before the stud dog owner will sign the AKC litter registration application.






NOTE: The American Kennel Club takes the position that the owner of the sire is required to sign an application to register a litter certifying only to the fact that a particular dam was bred to the sire identified on the Litter Registration Application form on a specified date of mating, unless there is an agreement signed by all parties concerned in which it is specifically set forth that the owner of the sire is not obligated to sign an American Kennel Club litter registration application form until such time as the stud fee has been paid.



2. Prior to breeding the owner of the bitch shall have performed the following veterinary procedures, and they shall be found to be satisfactory to the stud dog owner within     xx       days prior to the breeding:

a. Aerobic cervical ( high vaginal ) culture and sensitivity
b. Mycoplasma. cervical ( high vaginal ) culture
c. White blood count
d. Brucella test
e. Lyme Western Blot


3. A later return service is available to the same bitch in a later heat, to the same stud dog, if one or more puppies do not result from this breeding providing the following veterinary procedures shall be performed and their results are atisfactory to the stud dog owner:

a. Aerobic cervical ( high vaginal ) culture and sensitivity
b. Mycoplasma cervical ( high vaginal ) culture
c. White blood count
d. Brucella test
e. Thyroid (T4) test
f. e. Lyme Western Blot


4. Additional charges for board and transportation of the bitch shall be charged at the following rates:

a. Board at     $xx    per day.
b. Transportation to/from the - airport at       $ xx       per trip.
c. Board charges are waived for      xx      days, after which the above charges shall apply.
d. Additional veterinary charges deemed appropriate by the stud dog owner shall be charged to the bitch's owner at their usual rates.
